On November 28th, 2020 Sari the Sumatran orangutan gave birth to her second baby, Mathaï. Mathai was born at Pairi Daiza, a Belgian zoo and botanical garden located in Brugelette in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The infant orangutan weighed approximately 1.5 kilos (~3.3 lbs.).

Mathaï joins his mother, father (Ujian), brother (Berani), along with two other orangutans (Gempa and Sinta) in Pairi Daiza’s flower temple. This makes Pairi Daiza home to six total Sumatran orangutans.

Pairi Daiza also announced that Mathaï will soon be joined by another infant, as orangutans Gempa and Sinta are expecting a baby soon.

All three of the orangutan species (Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli) are considered to be critically endangered species. There are currently only approximately 14,000 Sumatran orangutans left in the wild.
